Dear Gavin & Lucas,
You are 6 months old today. Wow! It has been a busy few months, we have been on the go this summer and introducing you to everyone we can!
Your first big trip was to Walla Walla for Easter weekend with the Cabasco family (mommy’s cousins: Megan, Tony and kids Hannah, Gabe, Grace). Here you met the cousins as well as Great Grandma & Grandpa Neel, and mommy’s Aunt Linda & Uncle Doug for the first time. You also didn’t sleep the entire weekend, but it proved that we could get out of the house and travel somewhat easily.
When you were 4 months old you started to laugh and were big on saying “G” sounds like “guhhh” and “ah guh”. You loved tummy time (and still do) and were just starting to wiggle a lot when you were sitting on your own, though your movements were definitely not coordinated, and you would sometimes surprise yourself. It was at the end of this month (in May) that I had to return to work; I was so sad to leave my boys home but Grandma Stenstrom stayed with you so you didn’t have to go to day care.
Over Memorial Day weekend we took our first trip to Spokane and visited the lake cabin – it was then we measured you on the door, a true Neel family tradition. You also met Grandma’s cousin Candy and daughter Sara and husband Russ who also have twin boys Micah and Liam.
You started eating solid food (rice cereal) when you were five months old. At first you didn’t like it, but now you want more, more, more! Now that you are six months old we are going to start veggies and fruit! Sweet Potatoes will be your first taste of ‘the good stuff’. Gavin, you seem to like all foods (the thicker the better) whereas Lucas is a bit pickier and textures bother you (you really don’t like rice cereal).
Last weekend we went to the lake cabin in Spokane again for the 4th of July – and you slept right through all of the fireworks. Mommy made your baby blanket and you slept in your new camo tent! We spent a lot of time outside and you really started to play on your own.
Gavin, these days you laugh, smile, coo and babble all day long. You rarely cry unless you really need something (like a nap or food!). Sometimes you look at your brother and have a puzzled look on your face as if to say “what do you have to cry about?”. You often put your hands up by your ears when Lucas cries (we think you might be trying to block out the noise). You can now pass toys from one hand to another, roll over both ways and will smile back at us when we look your way. When you are on your tummy you can push all the way up to 90 degrees to see the world around you and are starting to scrunch your knees and feet up to “go”. You can sit with our help and love to read books.
Lucas, you are just coming into your own and are beginning to be more social. You still cry to get our attention and don’t babble much yet. You are experimenting with G sounds just like brother. You do not like to bend at the legs and would rather have them stretched out as far as they can go. Did I mention you also can roll over and were the first one to do it without any help, you were so proud! As soon as you were more mobile you became happier and happier.
Just this week you found your feet! Gavin figured it out first, and then Lucas joined in right after. You hold them; pull them and put them in your mouth every chance you get! It is very cute and a big milestone! You have so many new sounds and are curious about everything around you. You say “Ahhh” “Ohhh” “Owwwa” “Mmmmm” “Mummma” “Guh” “Buuh” and are experimenting with putting these sounds together to communicate to us. Gavin does this much more than Lucas, but you both are getting the hang of it. You also now have different tones of voice and love to squeal loud when you find something that excites you. For a few months now you have loved to blow bubbles and see what sounds come out.
You both love to sleep with your arms up behind your head, or with your arms up by your face while laying on your side. I often come into your room and find you both in the same position – or looking at each other. Gavin is such a good sleeper and are starting to be able to put yourself to sleep. Lucas still prefers to have mommy or daddy help him get to sleep. Neither of you nap that much. We often find you turned in a different position than we left you when we come to get you in the morning. When Gavin wakes up he doesn’t cry, he just looks around and coo to yourself! Lucas is the one who lets us know you are ready to eat, with loud cries!
In the past 6 months so much has happened. I am so proud of you and love you both very much!
