You have given us quite the scare a few times this month. Today (mommy and daddy's wedding anniversary) we went to pick you up at school and we found out that you stopped breathing and turned blue while getting your diaper changed. The teachers did not know what caused this but you were very hot and that night got a low grade temperature.
About a week ago a similar thing happened, we were eating lunch together at the kitchen table when you got very hot and passed out. I thought you might be choking so we got you out and tried to wake you. About 10 seconds later you woke up very confused and tired.
Because we didn't know what was going on we made an appointment to see Dr. Johnson right away. I told him that you seemed to just pass out and lose consciousness for about 15 seconds and when you wake up you are very hot and sleepy/confused. He suspected that you were having febrile seizures and sent us to children's hospital to have an EEG done to be sure.

On April 28 I had to wake you up 2 hours early so that you would be tired for your test. So we got up at 5 am and at 8 we made our way to Seattle Children's Hospital for your test, after dropping Lucas off at daycare all by himself - you were an only child for the day. Only I could go in with you for the test so daddy waited for us to get done. For the test I had to strip you down to your diaper and swaddle you in a blanket so you wouldn't pull the probes off. They colored on your head with red crayon to know where to place the sensors. Then using sticky glue the probes were put on - you did not like being held down and cried very hard. It was sad for mommy, but when the probes were all on I got to hold you. For the first 10 minutes they had you awake playing with toys to record your brain activity. Then I finally got to let you sleep and have milk. The whole thing took about 90 minutes and after we met daddy and had lunch and shopped at University Village. You were so brave and did very well!
On daddy's birthday, April 30, we got great news. Dr Johnson called and your EEG test was totally normal. This means that you do not have any seizure disorder, and we will just have to watch you when you get sick in the future because you could have these fever seizures again. We also need to tell anyone that takes care of you what to do, in case it happens again. Overall this was the best news we could hope for, as you will outgrow these febrile seizures by the time you are 6 years old and you do not have to take any medication for it.

A little bit about febrile seizures: Febrile seizures are full-body convulsions caused by high fevers (febrile means "feverish"). They affect kids 6 months to 5 years old, and are most common in toddlers 12 to 18 months old. The seizures typically last for a few minutes and are accompanied by a fever above 102º Fahrenheit (38.9º Celsius). Although they can be frightening, febrile seizures usually stop on their own and don't cause any other health problems. Having one doesn't mean that a child will have epilepsy or brain damage.
